The 5th of November, a day to remember.
This year’s 5th of November is a trifecta of notable events — the first in 1605, the second in 1944, and the third in 2024.
It also happens to be ‘spay day’ for my blue-eyed Bette.
So in honor of these events that I’m about to share with you, and wishing to spark joy in your day — especially since it’s Election Day here in the U.S. and it’s been a loooong campaign trail that we’ve all been following — I’m sharing a few photos of Bette with you. Enjoy!

On the 5th November 1605 — in London, England a man by the name of Guy Fawkes, who is by far the most infamous member of the Gunpowder Plot (which was comprised of a provincial group of English Catholics), was arrested while guarding the rather large collection of explosives he and his fellow plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords in London. His crimes: the attempted assassination of King James I and treason. Had the Gunpowder Plot not been foiled, they would have blown up Parliament and killed King James who had been scheduled to appear.
It didn’t take long for the Powers That Be to turn this into an annual celebration of fireworks and bonfires with the occasional effigy of Guy Fawkes. Today, this date is also known as “Guy Fawkes Day” or “Guy Fawkes Night” — and as you may suspect it’s celebrated in Great Britain.
How I’ll be celebrating: a dinner of bangers and mash (Adam and I have done this as long as we’ve been together). It’s one of my favorite adopted holidays mostly for this reason.
On the 5th November 1944 — in London, England a baby boy was born. This boy grew into a man who would change many lives for the better. This day is celebrated only by a few special folks around the globe — most notably England, Australia and the United States. If he times his whereabouts just right, he can enjoy the bonfires and fireworks of Guy Fawkes Night as if they were lit just for him. This boy grew into a wise old man who loves history, travel, his country and his family. His is a well-lived life that deserves celebration. And he just so happens to be my father-in-law. Happy Birthday, Robert!
How I’ll be celebrating: Raising a glass of a yet to be decided libation in his honor tonight.
On the 5th of November 2024 — Americans head to the polls to cast their vote for the next president of the United States. It’s our Election Day and these are always big days. This year it seems bigger than ever. More important than ever before.
No matter who wins this election to become our 47th President of the United States, history will be made today — for reasons I’m certain you are all familiar with. There isn’t much more I can or need to say on this topic as the media has been filled to the brim with coverage.
How I’ll be celebrating: With the strongest belief in our democracy including the peaceful transfer of power… and that there is far more that unites us than divides us.
